Sažetak
There are only three geographically isolated populations of stripe-necked terrapins (Mauremys rivulata) in Croatia. Most northern one in Ston (S) is suggested for captive breeding program due to its size, and the other two are included in the national monitoring program. The most southern population of oligotrophic Konavocica river (K) is in possible contact with Montenegro populations. In order to reveal eventual problems of the eutrophic Majkovi ponds population (M) due to isolation, small habitat area and microhabitat diversity, we aimed to compare morphology and demography of the M and the K population. Random sample of 31 individual was captured in K and 54 individuals in M by hands and nets during one occasion. Plastron length (PL), carapace length (CL) and width (CW) were measured using slide ruler. Algal growth covering carapaces was assessed visually using relative scale from 1 to 4. Ratio of males, females and juvenile terrapins in M was 0, 80 : 0, 95 : 1 and in K 1, 27 : 0, 55 : 1. Average PL, CL, CW in females from population M were ; 14, 49cm, 14, 85cm, 11, 11cm and in males ; 11, 13cm, 12, 93cm and 8, 78cm. Average PL, CL, CW in females from population K were ; 13, 18cm, 14, 34cm, 10, 028cm and in males ; 9, 72cm, 11, 15cm and 7, 72cm. Percentage of carapaces heavily covered in algae was lower in population K which could be influenced by difference in habitat type while in Konavocica there are more places for sunbathing and the water is oligotrophic. Females were averagely larger than males in both populations. There were no significant differences in measurements of males and females between M and K populations.
