Sažetak
Contribution of local Aurochs (Bos primigenius) to the development of modern cattle breeds is still an open issue. Our understanding of this issue has progressed recently as NGS enabled more efficient sequencing of the complete mitogenome and today there are around 300 complete cattle mitogenome sequences in the GeneBank. Using Illumina NGS we have additionally sequenced around 200 individuals from over 50 cattle breeds sampled largely in Central and South East Europe. Sequenced haplotypes were classified within P, Q, T1’2’3, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 haplogroups. Additional molecular (mtDNA D-loop) and pedigree analyses indicated the presence of the whole maternal lineage with 101 individuals having ‘Aurochs’ P classified haplotype. The found sequences strongly contributed to the diversification within ‘macro-haplogroup T3’, resulting with three deeply rooted branches and prompting for the reclassification. Overall, results of this study provide evidence of the contribution of local Aurochs to the formation of modern cattle breeds and the complexity of domestication process.
