Sažetak
The paper analyses Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer's activities undertaken from a liberal Catholic standpoint. The author argues, and on grounds of a number of relevant documents substantiates and elaborates as his conclusion, that within the scope of his public activities Strossmayer undeniably advocated liberal Catholic principles. Yet, in terms of secularization processes in society, which where aimed at reducing the influence of the Church on the school system and marriage laws, as well as to generally diminish the prerogative of the Church to promote Christian values in society, he also clashed with upholders of liberal concepts and thus advocated principles of more conservative nature. Despite revealing some controversy in Strossmayer's liberal worldview, for which he partly finds an explanation in the highly complex Croatian political circumstances of the time, and partly in the then heterogeneity of liberal worldviews, the author concludes that Strossmayer's general religious and political commitment had undoubtedly been liberal, because the elements of liberal ideology within his worldview had prevailed over the conservative ones and had predominantly directed his public actions.
