Sažetak
This book is a comprehensive and condensed review of several hundred publications on the evolution of penguin behaviors, particularly signaling, linking genetics and ecology via such behavioral adaptations as nuptial displays. This exciting work has developed from the authors’ many years researching on the behavioral strategies of penguins, such as the unique vocal signatures for individual recognition. Studies of penguins on islands surrounding Antarctica are presented, fully showcasing the behavioral significance of visual ornaments (mating displays) and how and why penguins behave via adaptive evolutionary explanations. This valuable book brings a lot of recently compiled data on 315 pages with 17 tables and 150 figures incorporated into the book, will realize the exceptional value of this contribution to life sciences, particularly in evolution of animal behaviors using penguins as a model for acoustical and optical studies. The book is intended for students, professional researchers, and teachers in biology, ornithology, ethology and evolution of behavior, marine ecology and polar biology. The book is also readable for penguin enthusiasts.
