Sažetak
Kosovo as a country in a transitional stage, the problem with energy supply has not solved yet because of the energy demands are being increased every day. About 94.2% of the electricity produced in Kosovo is produced by coal with a low calorific value of about 7200 kJ/kg. From the gas emissions that are produced by the coal-burning and from the rising of economic development, the level of pollution in the centres that are located near Power Plans, and in urban areas have been increased over permitted level. Currently, the Republic of Kosovo and the countries of Western Balkan are facing a huge demand for electricity, although the industry of Kosovo does not have satisfied levels of development and the energy demands of the industry are very small. Kosovo has signed the agreement 20%/20%/20% to meet the European Union's directive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020 to increase the use of renewable energies by 20% of total consumption and achieve energy savings by 20. Some of the above-mentioned objectives can be achieved by a detailed analysis of the potentials of solar radiation, biomass, hydropower and wind in various areas of the Republic of Kosovo. Despite the prospect of huge Renewable Energy Sources, Kosovo now has only 5.8% of installed solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and small hydropower plants together in the general production of Electricity. Renewable Energies will be probable alternatives to offset energy crisis in Kosovo. With the aim of this paper, the status and prospects of Renewable Energy Sources will be reviewed as well as their potentials, implementations, implications for being used in Kosovo will be analysed. Furthermore, the paper will attempt to provide with a detailed future research in the field of Renewable energies in order to fulfil the targets that the Republic of Kosovo has set up to be a member of European Union.
