Sažetak
The article focuses on the history of Croatian-Romance language contacts in the Croatian coastal area. In terms of language contacts, Istria has always had specific charactersitics due to its borderland position. Language contacts in Dalmatia initially resulted from Croatian-Romance symbiosis to be followed by centuries of Venetian rule. Dubrovnik epitomized a free city-state position which it retained until thr Napoleonic wars. The historical line which is followed extends from the Roman period, through the periods of Byzantine, Venetian and Austrian rule, to modern times.
