Sažetak
Background and aim The aim was to examine changes in reproductive health characteristics between two generations of first year medical students. Subjects and methods The study was conducted in academic year 2005/06 (Generation Y) among 255 (60.4% female) and in 2015/16 (Generation Z) among 304 students (59.5% female) using anonymous questionnaire. For the purpose of this study we analysed answers about reproductive health using descriptive statistics. Results Information about human sexuality, male students acquired mostly through television (Y 32.7%, Z 45.5%), followed by erotic magazines and films (Y 24.8%, Z 13%). Y female got information from magazines (26%) and television (24.7%), and Z from television (38.1%) and friends (27.1%). There were significantly more sexually active Y and Z male than female (64.4% vs. 42.2%, p=0.002 ; 52% vs. 29.3%, p<0.001). In the age from 16 to 19 years, first sexual intercourse had around 78.3% of Y male and 80% of Y female and 87.5% Z male and 85.7% Z female students. Contraception was always used, more often among male Z (67.2%) than Y (55.1%), while among female students it was more among Y (65.7%) than Z (58.9%) generation. Conclusion The results point to a later onset of sexual activity among students in generation Z and a greater awareness of reproductive health issue among male students. The increased number of students in generation Z who are informed about reproductive health through the media - television, indicates the need to meet requirements and needs of net generation in education about reproductive health.
