Sažetak
This paper addresses the importance of regional/national/pan-European infrastructures in the development of regional collaboration. On the basis of the following examples - DANUBIUS-RI The International Centre for Advanced Studies for River and Sea Systems ; ESS-ERIC European Spallation Source ; ELI Extreme Light Infrastructure ; DARIAH-ERIC Digital Research Infrastructures for the Arts and the Humanities, and CLARIN-ERIC Common Language and Technology Infrastructure -basic issues are discussed. This encompasses the development of regional RIs into pan-European RIs. RIs are also viewed as a platfrom for interdisciplinary research, education and training. RIs, whether regional or pan-European, are seen as a breeding ground for research across institutions, borders and disciplines. They focus on education and bring together, especially coung researchers from different universities and institutes. The societal impact of RIs mainly derives from the tight inter-relatedness between research, institutions and education of users.
