Sažetak
Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of many chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, type 1 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some common cancers. Numerous epidemiologic studies suggest that moderate exposure to sunlight, which enhances the production of vitamin D3 in the skin, provides adequate status of vitamin D. Sunlight exposure supplies most of our vitamin D requirement, because only a few foods naturally contain vitamin D. The aim of this study was to assess the average serum vitamin D concentration and the prevalence of inadequate vitamin D status in Croatian population. Subjects and methods: Participants were Croatian adults of both gender with mean age 45.5 years (n=791)(660 women and 131 men). There are no clear international agreements on what constitutes a level of vitamin D inadequacy. Three cut-offs of vitamin D inadequacy were fixed: <75 nmol/L, <50 nmol/L and <30 nmol/L. Vitamin D status was assessed by determining the concentration of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]. The biomarker was measured by enzyme immunoassay. Blood samples were collected as part of the project ''Diet, homocysteine and bone health'' (2007-2012) and the project ''Body weight as a risk factor for inadequate vitamin D status: a preliminary study'' (2014-2016). Results: Average concentration of 25(OH)D was 54.4 nmol/L. There was no significant difference of 25(OH)D concentration according to gender (p=0.968). The prevalence of 25(OH)D inadequacy was 83.8%, 46.1%, and 21.0% considering cut-offs <75, <50 and < 30 nmol/L, respectively. Conclusion: This study indicates a high prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy in Croatian population. Moderate exposure to sunlight, supplement use and/or increasing intake of foods fortified with vitamin D could be advised.
