Sažetak
The objective. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary zeolite clinoptilolite (CPL) on somatic cell counts (SCC), udder health and chemical composition of milk in Holstein-Frisian cows. Materials and methods. Thirty cows aged from 3 to 6 years, which were pregnant for 3 months and kept at a small-scale farm in northwestern Croatia, were included in the study. The cows were randomly assigned into two groups, control (n=15) and CPL-fed group (n=15). The latter group was fed twice a day with the addition of 50 g CPL in concentrate for dairy cows. The first milk sampling was performed prior to adding CPL to the diet. Three more samplings were performed on a monthly basis up to 6th month of pregnancy. The milk samples were analysed for chemical composition (milk fat, proteins, lactose, solids non-fat content and urea), SCC and by bacteriological examination. Results. The milk ingredients tested did not differ significantly in any of samplings or between the groups, though the chemical composition of milk was found to be more stable in CPL-fed cows. Significant differences between single samplings in CPL-fed cows were established in milk fat and urea content (P˂0.05). The SCC in milk did not differ significantly between groups. The cows from the control group had a 10.5-time higher risk of intramammary infections than CPL-fed cows. Conclusion. This beneficial outcome of our study could be ascribed to the antibacterial, detoxifying, antioxidative and immunostimulating effects of CPL in supplemented cows, which was exhibited by changes in several metabolic parameters tested, and the decreased incidence of intramammary infections during the dry period, parturition and early lactation.
