Centre Sirius is a centre for psychological counselling, education and research. It was founded in 2006 with the goal of promoting, implementing and improving psychological and psychosocial support in order to prevent risky behaviour and improve quality of life for individuals, families, groups and society at large. Over past two years, Sirius has implemented programs aimed to raising the quality of life for cancer patients and their families and to prevent psychological disturbance through educational workshops, group, individual and family counselling. The projects are being carried out in partnership with the Joint Cancer Society of St. Juraj and the Croatian Cancer League. Stress and influence of stress on health, stress management, psychological distress and cancer, cancer and sexual quality of life, chemobrain and how to improve cognitive ability, communication and family dynamics, how to communicate with children about parent's illness, workshops for children whose parents have a cancer were stressed at psycho-educational workshops. It is shown that family counselling improves better communication between family members and better information sharing, raising the level of knowledge about the illness and thus ensures the psychological well-being of all family members. At nutrition workshops, patients and family members acquired the necessary knowledge of the importance of nutrition, and at oncology - educational workshops, patients and family members learned how to live with cancer and how to develop healthy lifestyles during and after cancer treatment. Based on the evaluations, the programs fully met the individual and family member needs, who could undoubtedly express their fears in informal, open and supportive atmosphere and got professional answers to their doubts and concerns. Therefore, the role of NGO is unquestionable in raising the quality of life of cancer patients, making it a collaborative partner with the healthcare system.
