Sažetak
Cancer is a complex disease that affects not only the body but also the patient's psychological welfare. Therefore, we need multidisciplinary approach in treating cancer patients. Looking at the illness only through the physical aspect, we neglect an important factor - mental health. Not surprisingly, significant mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety disorders, and PTSD, are common in patients with cancer. Psychological disturbance and low psychological well-being directly influence patient's quality of life. It is well known that quality of life is an important outcome and it is considered as important endpoint in cancer clinical trials. Assessing quality of life in cancer patients can improve treatment and maximise person centred care, and psychological assessment must have focus on it. Study conducted by author showed that psychological support has had significant impact on all aspect of quality of life and suggested that psychological support must be one of the important factor in treatment of cancer patients. Psychological treatments may help cancer patients by increasing their knowledge about their disease and medical treatment ; by improving their emotional and functional adjustment, quality of life, and coping skills and physical health ; by increasing patients' compliance with traditional treatments and by increasing the length of survival or time to recurrence. What kind of psychological treatment will be used depends on disease time lime. Different psychological assessment and psychological treatment will be discussed.
