Sažetak
Objective: Prenatal exposure to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) is essential for normal fetal growth and neurodevelopment. Availability of LCPUFA depends mostly on maternal fish consumption which also exposes the fetus to the methylmercury (MeHg). MeHg is neurotoxicant whose prenatal low-level can affect long-term child neurodevelopment, which are considered to be mediated by oxidative damage and consequently inflammation. However, the impact of combined LCPUFA and MeHg from fish consumption during pregnancy may lead to contradictory influences on child development outcomes. Depending on which particular LCPUFA are present in the diet, neuroinflammation will, therefore, be kept at a minimum or exacerbated. We hypothesized that prenatal exposure LCPUFA through mother's consumption of fish can overcome or mask the effect of prenatal exposure to MeHg which would have potential protective effects in children with higher levels of MeHg.
