Sažetak
Dear Austrian friends and colleagues, It is of great pleasure and honour for the Croatian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) to congratulate the 50th anniversary of the Austrian Radiation Protection Association (ÖVS). The two societies have many common interests and characteristics, both being relatively small association in the sense of the membership number, and of much greater influence within a common European platform of the societies of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA). The influence of the ÖVS is specially visible and important when the actions concerning young radiation protection (RP) professionals are considered. Thanks to the inexhaustible stimulus of the ÖVS, IRPA has established the Young Professional Award (YPA) at the 3rd European IRPA Congress in Helsinki 2010. Since then, the YPA is given to the best young representative nominated by the national radiation protection society at all regional and international IRPA Congresses. CRPA actively participated in the establishment of rules for YPA and had its representative among the nine nominees already at the Helsinki Congress. Our two societies share a long-standing history and tradition of cooperation through the series of symposia of the Central and Eastern Europe. Such smaller gatherings enabled closer acquaintance of the members of two societies through formal and informal discussions. Not only professional and scientific relations have been established but also close friendships initiated. In 2006 on the occasion of its 40th anniversary the ÖVS established an award “Honorary Needle” for long-standing contribution to the international radiation protection, as well as to achievements and initiatives for harmonization of activities of the two societies. CRPA is very proud that among the first group of awardees in 2006 there was the former CRPA President, Mária Ranogajec-Komor. Today our radiation protection societies face new challenges in various fields of activities both globally and locally. Among them we have to mention interaction with various stakeholders and communication with the general public ; increased demand – sometimes unjustified -for radiation-based diagnostic procedures in medicine ; nuclear terrorism and threats of using dirty bombs and nuclear missiles with nuclear warheads ; education and training, professional certification and international recognition of RP professionals. Last but not least, the effective and efficient radiation protection cannot be based on science and its applications alone, but rather both RP professionals and stakeholders have to embrace the ethical principles underlying the radiation protections and develop radiation protection culture in everyday professional work. The 11th symposium of CRPA, to be held in Osijek, Croatia, 5 – 7 April, 2017, will be dedicated to the topics of ethics and culture in radiation protection this year. We cordially invite our Austrian colleagues and friends to join us in Osijek to have a fruitful discussion on our common future. dr. sc. Ines Krajcar Bronić the president of CRPA
