Sažetak
“Open type” livestock carriers are multi-deck ships characterized with large openings in the superstructure side and with the absence of transverse and longitudinal bulkheads in the superstructure part. The height of the superstructure is approximately equal to the height of the lower hull and its influence on longitudinal strength is very important and should be taken into consideration during determination of structural scantlings in very early design phase. This kind of ship structural topology generates structural challenges in longitudinal strength due to partially effective participation of superstructure in the hull girder bending and in transverse/racking strength due to absence of transverse bulkheads in superstructure. Main challenges and results of large livestock carrier have been briefly presented through the all three structural design phases: concept, preliminary and detail design using ULJANIK shipyard Newbuilding 526, as an example. The direct strength calculation has been carried out according to Lloyd Register (LR) SDA Rules for Ro-Ro ships using full ship FE model. To allow shipyard designer to fully realize all benefits of the direct strength procedure, in-house structural design support system OCTOPUS_LR was developed and used for rational structural design. Presented work is a result of successful cooperation trough joint work of ULJANIK shipyard, University of Zagreb and Lloyd Register research teams and presents an example of modern procedure in structural design of complex ships.
