Sažetak
Abstract: This research includes all dimensions of sustainability by recognizing the importance of a holistic understanding to define sustainable practices for future tourism development. It intends to examine relationships between externalities and sustainable development of tourism. During their holidays, tourists produce direct and indirect effects on third parties, which can either be positive or negative. The main proposition is that the tourism sector consumes natural resources ; moreover, given that agents that generate tourism travel to their destination, have an impact on the social, cultural, and natural environment of the host region. Such impact or externality influences the local residents and as such, merits an investigation. The main objective of the research is to analyze the complex relationship among the sustainable framework of environment capacity and its outputs either in the form of positive or negative externality. Further, to investigate the importance of sustainable development and various obstacles in the way of development in tourism and the catering sector in the Republic of Croatia. Article has a feature of a theoretical discussion because it deals with the recognition of the links between tourism and the environment in identifying externality with an ambition to deepen interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of tourism economics and environmental economics, and to provide the key answers about the relationship between tourism and the environment. Contribution of the paper is proposing a research method for identifying externalities and their impacts on various components of the sustainable tourism development in Croatia. Also, include suggestions for the future research and provide information about identified limitations.
