Sažetak
Blake’s book clearly testifies to the strong relation between the history of navigation and the history of cartography. Published in 2004, the first edition of the book is now expanded with a foreword by Sir Ben Ainslie and more than 40 further illustrations. The high-quality images of the maps, which include portolans, early world maps, and many manuscript maps by famous explorers and their navigators, tell us a story about the development of maritime cartography in a very nice manner, which will satisfy both professionals and a wider audience such as enthusiasts interested in maritime history andmaps. The here presentedmaps come from numerous institutions such as The Hispanic Society of America (New York), National Maritime Museum (London and Greenwich), UK Hydrographic Office, Admiralty Collection, Royal Geographical Society, British Library, Library of Congress, National Library of Australia, Netherlands National Archive (The Hague), Maritime Museum in Rotterdam, University Library of Utrecht, Library of the University of Leiden, Bibliothéque nationale de France, Mitchell Library (Sydney), Pepys Library (Cambridge), James Ford Bell Library (Minneapolis), and South Street Seaport Museum (New York). The author of the book is the Lieutenant John Blake who served as an officer in the Royal Navy for many years. His approach to maps is strongly defined by his personal maritime experience: his expertise on navigation and sailing is clearly visible.
