Sažetak
Immunoglobulin production defects are one of the most common primary immunodeficiencies, which increases the risk for recurrent respiratory infections, gastrointestinal diseases, autoimmunity and allergies. Asthmatic patients are more likely to have a diagnosis of sIgAD than nonasthmatic individuals, which may be due to the increased risk of bacterial infections in certain asthmatics. Aim: The aim of our study was to better understand the disease manifestation (recurrent respiratory infections and atopy) in patients with asthma and sIgAD. 105 children aged 4-14 years with sIgAD (IgA<0, 07 g/L) and/or asthma were recruited to the study. All patients were followed up for the period of 3 years and their health status was evaluated by: the number of infections, biochemical parameters, atopic status etc. Serum IgA levels were determined by immune-turbodimetric method. Patients were categorized into 3 gropus: sIgAD, asthma and asthma with sIgAD. sIgAD was more prevalent in males than in females. Atopy was more prevalent and total IgE and eosinophil levels were higher.in patients with asthma (asthma, asthma+sIgAD) than in non-asthmatics. Serum IgG levels were higher in patients with sIgAD compared to those with normal IgA. Respiratory infections prior to diagnosis and a 3-year average were most frequent in patients with sIgAD and asthma compared to those only with asthma or sIgAD. IgA-deficient patients with concomitant asthma have higher rates of recurrent infections, which may aggravate the underlying disease and make them less responsive to treatment.
