Sažetak
This study set to examine in what way teaching methodology, along with the amount of meaningful exposure to target foreign language, direct (e.g. social interaction with native speakers or living abroad) or indirect (e.g. language input through mass media exposure), can influence both language proficiency and the level of acquisition of that foreign language. The study focused on learning English as a foreign language in the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Croatia. The population sample consisted of 57 participants, (29) Croatian and (28) Chinese who volunteered to take part in this comparative study ; however, only 32 participants’ results were included in the final stage of the study. The comparative analysis formed around the question of language acquisition influenced by the exposure to the English language, primarily via media, in the learners’ natural environment. The study attempted to examine whether positive attitudes towards multicultural awareness and language learning, will result in higher competences of acquiring and utilizing the target language (in this case English). Thus, the learners’ linguistic context as well as language policies these countries implemented in their formal educational system along with the accompanying modes of language assessment, were explored. For the purposes of the research two specific assessment instruments were designed ; one to examine participants’ socio-linguistic background and the other to test their English language speaking proficiency.
