Sažetak
In this thesis the main aspects and concepts of team teaching (TT) as a teaching method will be discussed. When taking into consideration definitions of TT provided by different authors, we find that TT is a teaching method which relies on the cooperation of two (or more) teachers who share responsibilities in the classroom and plan, instruct and assess the lessons together. In the first part of this thesis, the key principles and theoretical framework of TT are presented. In order to get acquainted with this modern way of teaching, some facts about the competences necessary for TT and the organisational forms of TT are reviewed. Since TT is not a common method of teaching in Croatian education, but is used in the Austrian system of education, the benefits of the method as well as the differences between the school systems of these two countries are highlighted. Moreover, it is explained what the meaning of a high-quality education is, and that constant changes in education, according to the modern times we live in, are required. In the second part of the paper, the results of the research on TT are presented, portraying the participants’ awareness about TT, its positive and negative aspects, required competences, the perceived necessity of the method and attitudes towards it, as well as some recommendations for its implementation. The research was carried out in three phases. In the first part of research a questionnaire was disseminated among inexperienced Croatian (N=30) and experienced Austrian (N=33) groups of students of the English language at two colleges of teacher education, one in Austria and one in Croatia. The next part of the research was based on a semi-structured interview with an Austrian expert on TT, who focuses on this method while teaching both higher education students and primary school pupils. The last part of the research included an observation of two English language lessons which took place at one secondary school in Austria, where TT is used as a basic teaching method. The results were quite surprising, since almost all the participants in the inexperienced (Croatian) group of students showed a great interest in considering TT as a method they would use in their teaching in the future. Moreover, most of the participants of both groups thought that they had the competences necessary for TT and indicated positive attitudes towards TT in terms of its benefits for teachers and pupils. They seemed to mostly agree on the positive and negative aspects of the method. The information obtained in the interview with the TT expert as well as the classroom observation is presented in the thesis to provide the Croatian audience with the details of this method.
