Sažetak
Objectives. Attendance of the mothers to breastfeeding support groups on breastfeeding duration was investigated in the non-randomized controlled trial. Methods. The investigated and the control group of mothers were given postnatal care according to the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. The investigated group of mothers attended breastfeeding support group led by a visiting community nurse and women experienced in breastfeeding without additional training. Data on breastfeeding duration were collected retrospectively by self-reported questionnaire using WHO definitions of breastfeeding. Results. Of 393 mothers who participated in the study, 210 attended support group, while 183 were not. They differed in the following variables: time when the decision to breastfeed was made, smoking during lactation and social support while breastfeeding. More mothers in the investigated compared to the control group continued breastfeeding at least 6 months postnatally (83.8% vs. 48.1%, p<0.001), and exclusively breastfed till the age of at least 3 months postnatally (56% vs. 23.5%, p<0.001). Factors positively associated with the duration of breastfeeding for at least 6 months by logistic regression analysis were: time when the decision to breastfeed was made, intended duration of breastfeeding and family income, while maternal smoking inversely affected duration of breastfeeding. Conclusion. Duration of breastfeeding for at least 6 months and exclusive breastfeeding for at least 3 months were increased in infants of the mothers attending breastfeeding support groups.
