Sažetak
The theory of translation universals (Baker, 1996), or laws and features which all translations have in common, has already had an enormous influence on translation studies. The concept of regularities found in translations was first introduced by Gideon Toury (1991) and this echoed in the field of translation studies. Since then, various scholars have tried to identify whether translation universals actually exist and if so, how they can be classified. The notion still remains quite controversial, with some scholars advocating the idea and corroborating it with evidence (Laviosa-Braithwaite, 1996), some challenging or disputing it (Tymoczko, 1998), and some even further developing it by proposing new subtypes of universals (Chersterman, 2001). This paper aims to conduct a qualitative analysis of translation universals in a Croatian translation of the English original of a maritime institutional text Plan for the acceptance of a ship in distress to study the existence and behaviour of translation universals in such a discourse. The text was a part of the project entitled A Translation Study of English and Croatian Maritime Institutional Texts, which was based on linguistic analysis on various levels of parallel maritime institutional texts in English and their Croatian translations. A single text was selected to perform a pilot study of translation universals in order to dispute or confirm this notion on a small corpus. Based on previous findings from similar studies (Tominac Coslovich and Krišković, 2014), it is hypothesized that some translation universals, namely explicitation, would be challenged by such an analysis. The tools used in the research will combine corpus-based tools, like the software Paraconc, and manual analysis of the discourse. Such bottom-up approach aims to provide an insight into translation processes in order to raise awareness of translation decisions and practices.
