Sažetak
Due to the changed role of Cytotechnologists, introduction of new technologies and the increased need that Cytotechnologists be more involved in non-gynaecological cytodiagnostics, one of the examples where they could participate very well are the preparation and microscopic analysis of peripheral blood cells. The automated differential blood count gives us accurate and precise data of quantification and identification of normal white blood cells (WBCs). This method is not able to accurately identify and classify immature or abnormal cells, but will mark them for further microscopic analysis of peripheral smears, which will continue to be tested by trained personnel. Cytomorphological analysis of blood cells includes morphology and representation (percentage) of each type of leukocytes, erythrocytes and platelets. It helps detect and classify immature or abnormal leukocytes or any abnormalities that are present, giving us very accurate and necessary information to diagnose the specific cause of the disease and the monitoring of hematological patients. Any immature WBCs are included in the differential count of 100 cells, and any inclusions or abnormalities of the WBCs are reported. The evaluation of erythrocytes, besides reporting the type and number of any abnormal or immature forms, also includes morphology grading of the variation in erythrocytes size (anisocytosis), shape (poikilocytosis), color and content of the hemoglobin inside the erythrocytes (polychromasia and hypochromia). Platelet evaluations are noted in the report and includes descriptive amount of platelets in the blood smear, as well as their appearance (abnormal platelets, such as clumped or excessively large platelets). An abnormal differential result may be followed by other tests such as another blood smear, bone marrow aspiration, chromosome analysis, or immunophenotyping (flow cytometry). To be able to perform such diagnostic tests, it is necessary to have knowledge and skills that Cytotechnologists possess.
