Sažetak
The 500 -years´ history of the Idrija mine in Slovenia (1490 - 1995) resulted in widespread contamination of different environmental compartments due to the primitive method of ore roasting. The soil at ancient roasting sites contains from 10 to even 10.000 mg Hg/kg. By means of rain water mercury can be leached away into deeper soil layers and can thus reach the groundwater. In order to estimate mercury leaching, the experiments were performed on the soil sample from ancient roasting sites containing 1347 mg Hg/kg using ultrapure water of different pHo values (in the range from 3.00 - 11.46), since the pH is an important factor affecting the mobility of mercury in soils by changing its speciation. It has been found that is mainly the physical (dissolved vs. adsorbed) fractioning of soil organic and inorganic matter that determines the behavior and distribution of mercury in soils. As little as 0.000024 - 0.001543% of the total Hg was leached after 24 h, showing a strong affinity of Hg for soil constituents. The highest concentration of total leached Hg was obtained at pHo = 11.46 since in alkaline conditions humic substances dissolve and release Hg. The concentration of total leached Hg for the examined pH range was very low, but still exceeded the maximum permissible levels for drinking waters according to Croatian and Slovenian legislations, and to the Directive of the European Community Council. This indicates the necessity of further monitoring of the soil quality as well as studying the Hg leachability at these ancient roasting sites of the Idrija district.
