Sažetak
The concept of the "philosophies of human nature" refers to the expectations that people have about the ways in which people generally behave. To assess these expectations, Wrightsman (1974) developed the Philosophies of Human Nature Scale (PHN) that proved to measure two factors: trustworthiness and cynicism. This paper presents the results of the study in which the shortened, 20-item version of the PHN scale was administered to 109 undergraduates at the University of Zadar and to 317 adults from various parts of Croatia. In both samples, the factor analyses yielded the expected two-factor solution. The internal consistency of the trustworthiness and cynicism subscales proved to be satisfactory in both samples. The correlation between the subscales was not significant in either sample. In support of the subscales convergent validity, different patterns of their associations with the socio-demographic variables are obtained. The implications of these differences for the distinction between positive and negative views of human nature will be discussed.
