Sažetak
The small and medium-sized business entrepreneurship (SME) represents the basis of each national economy. From the European perspective, the small and medium-sized business entrepreneurship has been developing within two polarized European economies, i.e. the economies of the developed Western European economies and the Eastern European economies in transition. The small business entrepreneurship is the prerequisite to the social welfare and satisfaction of a nation, as well as to the general economic development. By contrast, a large economy absorbs the amount of the economically active population according to its abilities which usually amounts to approx. 35%. The very balance of the small business entrepreneurship and a large economy, i.e. large companies are the goal that each state needs to achieve through its politics and economic policy. This is the reason for the adjustment of the criteria of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) which need to transform their size and ensure a balanced development of large organizations. Therefore, the balancing of the SME criteria is the subject of the economic policy and the overall development factor. On the other hand, the quality of the SME management, assuming there is a healthy market-oriented business climate, is the development factor of the small and medium-sized enterprises. If we observe the development of the SME management of the developed economies in Europe, as well as of the economies in transition, we see some significant differences. Therefore, this research focuses on the perception and analysis of such differences, in order to eliminate the factors which oppose the development of the SMEs in the economies in transition. Thus, the goal of this research paper is to provide an answer to a number of questions, such as: "Which are the criteria of the SME of European economies and what is the purpose of their dynamism?", "What are the basic features of the SME economies in transition?", "What are the manifestations of the differences between the SMEs of the developed European economies and the economies in transition?", "What are the unfavourable characteristics of the SME management in the economies in transition?" These are the questions to which this research paper aims to provide an answer.
