Sažetak
The beginning of the 21st century has been marked with a global economic crisis which was followed by unemployment, indebtness, uncertainty. More and more families are faced with poverty which negatively affects their children's well-being and brings their fundamental rights into question. The goal of this paper is to examine the role of poverty, multiple material deprivation and parents' educational neglection in achieving success in school, commitment to school obligations and future aspirations. The research involved 610 participants (51.6% girls and 44.8% boys), with their average age being 13.88 years (SD=0.73). Along with Questionnaires of general data and SES, the research included the Scale of material deprivation, Scale of educational neglection, Scale of commitment to carrying out school obligations and Scale of future aspirations. It was confirmed that the poorest participants achieve the worst results in schools. Those who come from a family with a lower SES and perceive that they are materially deprived also expect having difficulties in continuing their education. More than a third of participants believe that their right to education is at risk due to their adverse material situation. The results of regression analysis show that SES and some variables of educational and social deprivation are statistically significant predictors of success in school, and those explained 21.7% of variance in achieving success in school. Girls have better success in school, they are more commited to fulfilling school obligations and they have bigger aspirations. Educational neglection is a statistically significant predictor of commitment to fulfilling school obligations and future aspirations, i.e. the bigger the educational neglection by parents, the smaller the commitment to fulfilling school obligations and future aspirations. The conclusion states that material and non- material deprivation puts the children's right to education to risk, negatively impacts their progress in school and in life, lessens their chances of achieving their full potential.
