Sažetak
Our previous in vitro and in vivo studies on standard tumor cell lines: 4T1 mammary adenocarcinoma, B16F10 melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma SCCVII have demonstrated that dipotassium-trioxohydroxytetrafluorotriborate K2[B3O3F4OH] affects the growth of cancer cells. Based on the promising results of the anticancer activity that are comparable to the standard cytostatic 5-fluorouracil, we decided to analyze its antioxidant capacity. In our research we have also included two other simpler representatives of the boroxine family compounds: trimethoxyboroxine and trimethylboroxine, which are commercially available. The basic idea was to explore the possibility of similar behavior within the same class of boron compounds, or to determine the difference in the activity of K2[B3O3F4OH] compared to the simpler representatives of the same family of compounds. Theoretically the K2[B3O3F4OH] has the ability to exchange electrons in the process of extinction of reactive radicals since two boron atoms are sp3-hybridized and they use electrons from the inner shell. Trimethoxyboroxine and trimethylboroxine, on the other hand, theoretically should not exchange electrons, although recent studies indicate the possibility of the boron atom to form something like carbions and participates in the exchange of protons. For experimental work we choose standard laboratory method DPPH. The selected boroxines were faced with DPPH radical at a temperature of 350 C in various concentrations, and with a reaction time of 1 hour. Results of DPPH test showed extremely weak antioxidant capacity of all investigated boroxines. When K2[B3O3F4OH] was tested at higher concentrations, instead of reducing the color of DPPH radicals, there was an increase in the absorbance readings, which could mean that it acts as a pro-oxidant at higher concentrations. Future research should examine the possibility that the reaction time is too short, or whether the change in the reaction conditions can boost their antioxidant capacity. Finally, future research should confirm or reject the hypothesis that K2[B3O3F4OH], in the absence of the expected antioxidant activity, actually act as pro-oxidants.
