Sažetak
Building on our very successful 2015 workshop, we continue to explore issues in English language usage that pose a challenge to advanced and native speakers alike. Thus, we delve into punctuation, vocabulary, style, and other problem areas, trying, for example, to demystify the comma, to understand the difference between “all together” and “altogether”, to see whether “e.g.” is always acceptable, etc. We call these things “subtleties” because a number of people do rather well communicating in English without ever reaching the higher levels of language proficiency. In fact, this is true for speakers of many “rich” languages, and it does not matter whether a language is learned as a first, second, or foreign – the challenge of becoming highly proficient in all the layers of a language remains the same.
