Sažetak
In my paper I ask the question whether the new authoritarianism is a political theory or a political form. Also, are there any psychosocial bases of the new authoritarianism which are different from the old authoritarianism? Or is it at the pscyhological level the same old adage, the definition of which was put forward mostly by Adorno. The inspiration for the paper came from Leo Löwenthal’s work “Re-mastering the past”. The victory over Nazism was a military victory, not the victory of democracy, and certainly not the triumph of democracy. Therefore, the question: how and why authoritarianism persists at the core of democracy? In this respect, I refer to the early studies on authority by the Frankfurt School authors (Studien über Autorität und Familie, 1936), and to the articulation of authoritarianism in their later works. I will explain the difference between the old authoritarianism and the new authoritarianism, the concept which has recently come to the fore, especially through Henry A. Giroux’s numerous works, such as Dangerous Thinking in the Age of the New Authoritarianism (2015). Other authors speak of mild, user- friendly, vegetarian or zombie authoritarianism - a copycat democracy.
