Sažetak
The Roma population settled in the Croatian lands in the second half of the 14th century and is one of the oldest minority groups in Croatia today. Their coexistence with the local non-Romani population over the course of the next six centuries was s there had been some attempts by some European governments in resolving “Gypsy problem”. Then the enlightened rulers, like the Prussian King Frederick and the Spanish King Ferdinand VI, attempted forcible assimilation measures to solve this problem. In the 18th century Habsburg rulers Maria Theresa and Joseph II took a series of reforms which sought to modernize the state and society in accordance with their educational ideas. Comprehensive reform of this enlightened policy of Maria Theresa also reflected on the situation of Roma. In this context Maria Theresa issued a number of important legal provisions on Roma in the period from 1749 to 1767, which sought to assimilate them and in such a way to integrate into the Habsburg state. Its reforms were aimed at completely change the ethnic and socio-economic status. Research will focus on the Theresian reforms towards Roma on Croatian territory in the second half of the 18th Century. At the same time, for a better understanding of this reform action will be needed contextualization with the same reform in other parts of the Habsburg Empire and other European countries (especially Prussia).
