Sažetak
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. According to the Croatian Cancer Registry, in 2012 there were 2227 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Mortality rate of breast cancer in Croatia has been rising steadily over the last two decades and increases with the age of the patient. In addition to cytotoxic treatment, these patients receive multiple medications, chemo- and biotherapy, hormonal agents, treatment of comorbid diseases and supportive care drugs. In our study we aimed to evaluate frequency, severity, clinical importance and risk factors of drug interactions in breast cancer patients. Methods: 100 breast cancer patients who applied to University Hospital’s medical oncology clinics are included to this study. Patient’s demographical features, their treatment regimen, comorbid diseases and other medication are gathered with a questionnaire. The interaction checkerprogramme is used to detect drug interactions and classify them in the order of importance. Results: 100% of all patients was female. Median age was 66.3 years. Mean number of drugs that use was 6, 07 ± 2.10. Comorbid diseases are evaluated further, 30 % of them found as hypertension and 15 % of them found as diabetes mellitus. 158 potential interactions were detected.Potential drug interaction was identified in 62 % of patients. 75% of interactions were between antineoplastics and 25 % of them was between comorbidity drugs. 73, 42% of these interactions were moderate, 20, 28 % was minor and 6, 30% was severe. Older age, existance of comorbidity and numberof drugs were detected to increase drug interactions according to multivariate analysis (p<0.01). Conclusions: Potential drug interactions are commonly seen in breast cancer patients, therefore their entire medication regimen should be investigated before starting any treatment. Number of drugs that are being used, existance of comorbidity and older age are the risk factors for drug interactions.
