Sažetak
Silver is non-essential metal with adverse effects to plant cells. In order to investigate the effect of ionic colloidal silver on physiological changes in Lemna gibba plants at different nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) levels, plants were grown on 100, 25 and 10% N and P levels in nutrient solution for seven days and then exposed to 100, 200 and 500 μg/L Ag for 24 hours. Silver inhibited growth and caused frond abscission alongside with significant decrease in protein and photosynthetic pigment concentrations. Oxidative stress, evident from significant accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation end-products, indicated insufficient antioxidative response of L. gibba plants. Observed physiological changes in L. gibba plants grown in nutrient solution with 25% N and P concentration were the result of silver toxicity while the most pronounced oxidative stress observed in plants treated with silver in the nutrient solution with 10% of N and P was a result of synergistic effect of decreased nutrient concentrations and added silver. Duckweeds are widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and can be used as models for further study of harmful metal effects on plants in varying nutrients concentrations.
