Sažetak
The European Championship which was held in Athens in 1995 is the last major tournament where the Croatian basketball team achieved significant success - winning a bronze medal. At the time when the gold was about to be rewarded to Yugoslavian (which was then comprised of Serbia and Montenegro) players, the countries with which Croatia was still in a five-year war, the Croatian players left the ceremony. This act was generally assessed as positive and necessary by the Croatian public, and as such a kind of continuation of the war on the sports field (war by other means). On the other side, twenty years after the event mentioned among the part of the public, there is prevailing thesis that this act character "has sealed" the fate of the Croatian basketball at major events casting a "Curse" on Croatian basketball because of its unprofessional character. Due to the frequency of use and the fact that this is so often repeated in public discourse it becomes universally accepted, this saying can be considered an example of what Hobsbawm (1983) calls the "invention of tradition". This case demands systematic sociological research because the existing analyses of this event have populist nature and as such are insufficient to understand the relationship of politics and sports, in particular national identity and sport in the Croatian socio- political context of the twentieth century. Based on relevant literature, using qualitative research methods: semi-structured interviews, content analysis and discourse analysis of media articles and documents, we will try to expand the understanding of the relationship of these phenomena.
