Sažetak
The potential probiotic strain Lactobacillus acidophilus M92 was examined for its ability to deconjugate bile salts and remove cholesterol from laboratory medium during growth. Results obtained by the thin-layer chromatography showed that L. acidophilus M92 was able to deconjugate taurocholate, producing cholic acid, while glycodeoxycholate was not hydrolysed. L. acidophilus M92 deconjugated about 20 % of the taurcholate added to the growth medium. Furthermore, the influence of individual conjugated (taurocholate, glycodeoxycholate) and deconjugated (cholate, deoxycholate) on the cholesterol removal from the growth medium by L. acidophilus M92 was studied. The results indicated that L. acidophilus M92 during growth removed cholesterol from the MRS broth by means of the coprecipitation of the cholesterol with the deconjugated bile salts at pH less than 6.0, but also due to the cholesterol assimilation. This assimilation appeared to be more important in the presence of sodium taurocholate. It might be concluded that both, the deconjugation of bile salts and cholesterol assimilation, had the potential to lower serum cholesterol concentration.
