Sažetak
Today more than ever before teachers are faced with many challenges in their classes due to the implementation of modern technologies in the traditional teaching methodology as well as different learning styles of the new generations of students who are without exception 'digital natives', as coined by Marc Prensky in his work Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants (2001). One cannot but acknowledge the numerous benefits of embracing modern technologies, such as easier and faster access to information, daily exposure to English language in real-time, as well as higher level of student autonomy in completing their assignments, to mention only some of those benefits. On the other hand, there are also possible obstacles that may arise when using modern technologies in teaching and learning foreign languages, particularly in an academic environment. This paper intends to explore some of those issues as viewed by both students and teachers in their respective surveys, which were conducted among the students at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb and the LSP Teachers at Higher Education Institutions in Croatia. The results of the surveys will be compared to the observations based on our own teaching experience and relevant sources we have used in our research. There are several issues related to ways in which the use of modern technology affects students’ academic skills, one of which is certainly increased level of plagiarism in their work. Another topic of interest for this research is the impact of modern technology on the development of students’ language skills, particularly reading and speaking. Finally, the challenges of teamwork and collaborative learning, which often require face-to-face communication, as the more time-consuming alternative to social networks, will also be discussed in this paper.
