Sažetak
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been widely used as an artificial bone substitute because of the its high biocompatibility and good bioaffinity, as well as osteoconductability. In the present study chicken eggshells, a biowaste, was used for producing biomaterial hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAp). HAp is a major component found in bones and teeth. The first step in the synthesis of HAp from egg shells was the transformation of CaCO3 (main component of egg shells) into CaO at 1000 °C, then the CaO was converted to Ca(OH)2 by the hydrolysis reaction. Finally, HAp was synthesized by wet chemical route - precipitation reaction, in which Ca(OH)2 and H3PO4 were used as precursors, respectively. Precipitated HAp was separated by the filtration, dried at 100 °C and heat treated at 1100 °C for 2 h in an air and vacuum atmosphere. Phase composition and morphology of heat-treated HAp was characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). This investigation indicate that the recycling of chicken eggshells reduces the need of management of biowaste and eggshells can be useful raw materials for synthesis valuable biomaterials.
