Sažetak
Within ‘green economy’ concept the large portion of research is devoted to designing new, more environmentally friendly solvents to be used in green technologies. As a promising alternative to traditional organic solvents, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have been dramatically expanding in popularity. NADES are generally based on mixtures of cheap and readily available components: nontoxic quaternary ammonium salt (e.g. cholinium chloride) and a naturally-derived uncharged hydrogen-bond donor (e.g. vitamins, amines, sugars, alcohols and carboxylic acids). NADES may be considered as ‘designer solvents’ due to their numerous structural variations and possibility to design their physicochemical properties to be appropriate for usage in different processes. Also, it was proposed that NADES composed of forming compounds with proved biological activity, such as amino acid or organic acid, could also have similar properties. Furthermore, NADES are based on compounds that are safe for human consumption which opens numerous possibilities for their applications in the food industry. One of the possible applications of NADES is extraction of biologically active compounds from plant material. A few studies, in which NADESs have been applied for the extraction of bioactive compounds, showed that many compounds are dissolved better than in water or lipids. Those results indicates that NADES may be used for very efficient extraction and storage of natural products from plants, which could be used as pharmaceuticals and bio-actives, flavors, natural colorants, etc. Additionally, the forming components of NADESs are abundant in our daily diet and so extract could be directly used in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetical and agrochemical applications without the need for expensive downstream purification steps. Moreover, usage of natural solvents can lead to new products by extraction of new valuable high quality natural compounds from plant biomass. Herein, a brief overview of the up to date knowledge regarding these solvents, with special emphasis on extraction of phenolic compounds from grape pomace will be presented.
