Sažetak
Gastrointestinal nematodes are among the most important causes of production loses in sheep and goat farming. The major exposure of sheep to the infections is influenced also by their diet poor in tannins. During the experimental period the treated group of sheep fed with mixture of Pistacia lentiscus L. dry foliage, barley and soybean meal, while the control group of sheep fed with mixture of barley and soybean meal. The number of oocists and nematode eggs in gram of feces (EPG) was monitored on days 0, 5 and 7. The blood parameters are measured on days 0 and 7, while the concentration of tannins in kidney and liver were determined on day 7. Animals fed with P. lentiscus dry foliage showed a significant decrease in EPG number (P<0.05) while the blood parameters and tannin concentration seem not to be impaired by the treatment. According to results obtained the foliage of P. lentiscus could be used as healthy and environmental friendly tool in control of nematodes in ruminants, contributing to reduction of pasture contamination with nematode eggs and consequently slow down the dynamics of animal infection.
