Sažetak
This article deals with one form of slang, that is, hip hop slang. After a general definition of the word “slang” itself, there is a description of its linguistic characteristics and how social situations give rise to various forms of slang, which in time may become part of slang as a whole or even a part of standard speech. A short overview of the hip hop culture describes how it developed and how its social background prompted the development of hip hop slang. Since rap music is one of the main elements of this culture, and since it is a form of art which combines music and language, it is most influential in the creation and spread of that form of slang. Examples of hip hop slang given in the article serve to show its characteristics, such as creativity, colourful nature and variety.
