Sažetak
The Republic of Croatia has 4.5 million inhabitants and an estimated diaspora population of similar size (approx. 3 million people). The Croatian community abroad has made significant efforts in the maintenance of ethnic identity, language and culture by organizing language classes and cultural events (Cvikic, Jelaska & Kanajet Simic 2010 ; Cvikic, Novak Milic & Aladrovic Slovacek 2015). This paper explores the individual reasons and various motivation for language maintenace and/or heritage language learninig: affective, instrumental and identificational. Based on the results of an online survey conducted among Croatian heritage language speakers, this paper discuss a role of a heritage speaker in the globalized world.
