Sažetak
It has been known that properties and responses of solid materials can be directly modified and controlled by specific features of the 3-D assembly of molecular building-units that form a particular material. Therefore, a prerequisite for delivering new materials with targeted properties is certainly a set of guidelines on how those building-blocks are likely to assemble in the solid state. While the organic solid-state has derived a numerous productive strategies for non-covalent synthesis by identifying synthons that provide effective avenues for supramolecular synthesis, the reliable synthetic strategies that employ a combination of coordinate-covalent bonds and relatively weak and readily reversible hydrogen bonds have not received anywhere near the same attention. With the idea in mind to explore possible transferability of specific supramolecular motifs from organic to metal-organic systems as a way of developing robust synthetic strategies of metal-containing architectures, we have focus on the oxime moiety as it has been known that in purely organic systems it readily forms only one supramolecular motif, i.g. the oxime head-to-head motif, with high probability of occurance (supramolecular yield). Here, we have carried out a systematic structural examination of a series of metal(II) complexes with pyridine-type ligands decorated with the oxime moiety and complemented the experimental efforts by an in-depth theoretical analysis of molecular electrostatic potential surfaces to rationalize the observed structural features.
