Sažetak
Osteoporosis is a major public health problem. There is evidence suggesting that osteoporosis knowledge could be a contributor to preventive behaviour. The aim of study was to assess knowledge about osteoporosis and compare it to nutritional habits and physical activity level among people in two regions of Croatia- seaside Istrian region and mainland region VukovarSrijem County. Study involved 200 participants aged 25-75 years, 100 from each region. Both genders were involved. Nutritional habits and physical activity level were assessed by questionnaires, while knowledge about osteoporosis was measured by short 25- item test. Most of the subjects answered correctly 62-75% of the questions in the osteoporosis knowledge test. Level of knowledge did not affect nutritional habits, but physical activity level was different among the people with different knowledge level. We found no difference between results of people from different regions. There are differences in both nutritional habits and physical activity level among people from different regions, people from seaside region are more active and with dietary intakes that differ from mainland region mostly in dairy products and fat intake. Results lead to conclusion that subjects of this study recognized physical activity as important factor for prevention of many diseases, including osteoporosis. There is need for further actions on promotion importance of nutrition as well.
