Sažetak
The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women and maternity staff about umbilical cord blood (UCB) banking. A prospective study was conducted in two University hospitals in Zagreb, Croatia between November 2014 and April 2015. Two anonymous questionnaires where used, for pregnant women and maternity staff, containing questions about them and their knowledge and attitudes towards UCB banking. Totally 960 pregnant women and 105 staff members were included in the study. In the group of pregnant women, 70% knew about UCB treatment possibilities, 39% could name one condition treatable by UCB and 22% were aware of different banking options. 49% of them obtained information from the media and 6% from their gynecologist. Older age and higher level of education significantly predict knowledge about UCB banking of pregnant women (p<0, 01) while concerning maternity staff neither age, avocation nor Clinical hospital could predict knowledge regarding UCB banking. Despite good general knowledge about UCB banking pregnant women are insufficiently informed about its possibilities. All perinatal care providers are well informed about UCB banking and should play a central role in this task but should be additionally educated and motivated into transferring their knowledge to pregnant women.
