Aim and purpose: The use of shade guides to measure shades in dentistry is a subjective process and many variables may affect the Result: the surrounding illumination, the angle of view of the tooth and the tab, chromatic perception of the dentist such as previous eye exposure and metamerism, fatigue and ageing. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of errors for various colors of VITA Classical shade guide tabs using spectrophotometer. Materials and method: In vitro measurement including 2 time slots, 3 different examiners, 1 Vitapan Classical shade guide and VITA EasyshadeAdvance 4.0. Measurements modes were set as single tooth and training. For each tab in shade guide three measurements were performed for every modifier (time, examiner, measurement mode). Total of 18 measurements of each tab were performed. Training mode produced discrepancies between actual color and measured color. Contingency tables were utilized to analyze final grades ranging from 0 to 3 for all the modifiers. Results: There were statistically significant differences between various colors measured (p < 0.05). Standard measurement mode produced three distinctive dE values which were analyzed using one way ANOVA. There were also differences between different colours in error sizes (p < 0.05). The majority of the errors occurred in measurement of C group of colors. Summary and conclusions: Due to the errors in shade guide color estimation in this study it can be concluded that the dental shade guide in not reliable enough and therefore the digital and visual colour matching methods should be used together in order to get more consistent results.
