Sažetak
The paper aims to describe the main features of the complex Istrian multilingual environment, characterized by a cross-cultural syncretism, with special emphasis on the linguistic repertoire of the italophone speaking community. The unique Istrian linguistic macrosystem is shaped by asymmetric and diglossic relations among three national standard languages (Croatian, Slovenian, Italian), macro-regional dialects (Istrovenetian and the Chakavian koine’), micro-regional dialects (Chakavian, Kajkavian, Stokavian) and local dialects (Istriot, Istroromanian, the Montenegrin dialect of Peroj).
