Sažetak
The international importance of this region was confirmed when in 1978 the Velebit Mountain is recognized as part of the international network of Biosphere Reserves. The insect fauna of the Mt. Velebit is rather uninvestigated. These are the main reasons that have induced me to start systematic research work on the Velebit. Faunal research work on horse flies (Tabanidae) was carried out in June of 2001, in July of 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and in August of 1996, 2000. On the territory of the North Velebit a total of 1013 specimens of horse flies were collected. The collected specimens were classified into 22 species. The genus mostly represented is Tabanus with 9 species, followed by Hybomitra with 5 species, Haematopota, Philipomyia, each with 2 species and Silvius, Atylotus, Therioplectes, Dasyrhamphis, each with 1 species. The most commonly species of horse flies are Philipomyia aprica with 38,49%, Tabanus glaucopis with 27,24%, Tabanus bromius with 8,88%, Haematopota pluvialis with 8,58% and Tabanus quatuornotatus with 6,51% in the collected sample. The determined species have been collected on 6 localities, that cover 5 fields on the UTM grid of Croatia. In the horse flies fauna of North Velebit, in addition to boreal - Eurasian species, there are also a few Mediterranean species.
