Sažetak
The paper deals with the beginnings of Croatian hotel business that forms the base of the tourism industry and initiates a string of interdependent activities, and it uses Dubrovnik as an example since it is one of Europe's leading tourist destinations today. Orientation towards tourism in Dubrovnik has a long tradition ; right from the first organized arrivals of visitors, with the development of steamships and the opening of the modern Grand Hotel Imperial (once the elite hotel of the former Austrian province of Dalmatia and now the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik), with its almost constant growth of tourism in the period of turbulent political, economic, and social changes in the first decades of the 20th century. The aim of the paper is to explore the origins of hotel business in Dubrovnik as a starting point for the development of modern hotel industry. The success of the competitiveness of Dubrovnik hotels in the international market is the result of intensive development and improvement of quality of hotel products and services at all levels of business of this unique city in the south of Croatia aware of its touristic historical heritage.
