Sažetak
The purpose of this graduation thesis is to introduce and describe a number of interdisciplinary or cross-curricular concepts of teaching English as a foreign language. The main reason for this research is the fact that many children do not like to learn a foreign language, because the lessons tend to be uninteresting and repetitive. Since there are a lot of interesting concepts of connecting a foreign language with other subject areas, I introduced a few and showed how they could be associated with different intelligences which individuals possess. The thesis is composed of ten chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of interdisciplinarity. First, the idea of interdisciplinarity is defined and its advantages for using it in the classroom are presented. After that, the connection between thinking and language is illustrated, and the relationship between language and the brain is discussed, which is important for acquiring language. Then different ways of thinking are examined:critical and creative thinking. The concept of multiple intelligences introduced by Howard Gardner (1983) and Robert Fisher’s (1990) ways of teaching across the curriculum are also explained, with reflections on the possible ways of integrating them into schools.. Finally, the concept of interdisciplinarity is linked to different ideas proposed by different authors in order to connect language with other subjects, confirming the advantages of interdisciplinary teaching.
