Sažetak
The thesis deals with orphan characters in children’s literature. It examines their symbolism and traces their roots back to folktales and fairy tales. After exploring the history of orphan stories in Croatian and in English, it focuses on two novels with orphan protagonists: Hlapich the apprentice in Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića [The Strange Adventures of Hlapich the Apprentice] by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić (1913), and Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maude Montgomery (1908). The texts are analyzed and compared in light of social contexts and views on childhood at the time they were published, of the literary traditions from which they emerged, as well as of the genre conventions. Both authors relied on tradition, and created literary masterpieces. The optimistic protagonists of these novels both rise above their difficult conditions. These novels have influenced generations of readers.
